Gospel Study - Hie to Kolob

Today was thinking about symbolism and I read something Gospel Symbolism by Joseph Fielding McConkie that was a bit of a revelation for me.

In the book Brother McConkie stated that Abraham (Abraham 3) through the use of the Urim and Thummim had the heavens opened to him and that he learned about the glory and revolutions of the sun, moon, and stars, in particular Kolob and other great heavenly bodies that are closest to God's throne.  In that same chapter we also learn about the nature of spirits and concludes with a brief account of the council in heaven and Satan's rebellion.

Now what I've missed all this time is the phrase, "as, also" in verse 18.

Holy Cow!

This phrase ties the revelation on stars to the revelation of spirits!

Knowledge of astronomy is not essential to salvation.  Knowledge of the government of heaven is!

Abraham learning about Kolob is really Abraham learning about Christ.  Kolob is in similitude of Christ.  How have I missed that?  The stars are in the likeness of spirits.

We are told that Kobob was the first to be created.  Kolob is nearest to the throne of God.  Kolob is the greatest of all the stars.  Kolob is described as being "after the manner" or in the likeness of God - first in government and governs all those of the same order.  Even though there are many great one near it, all receive their light from Kolob.  Kolob holds the key of power.

This description and language is the same language used to describe the Savior!

This is BIG!

... well at least to me...

  1. 1. If you could hie to Kolob
    (If I could get to Christ)
    In the twinkling of an eye,
    (Just like that)
    And then continue onward
    With that same speed to fly,
    Do you think that you could ever,
    Through all eternity,
    Find out the generation
    Where Gods began to be?
    (I would get to see eternity as He sees it.  I would see Him and when this great Plan was conceived.)
  2. 2. Or see the grand beginning,
    Where space did not extend?
    Or view the last creation,
    Where Gods and matter end?
    (I would get to be a part of new creations!)
    Methinks the Spirit whispers,
    "No man has found 'pure space,'
    Nor seen the outside curtains,
    Where nothing has a place."
    (It really is mind boggling!)
  3. 3. The works of God continue,
    And worlds and lives abound;
    (I want to see that!)
    Improvement and progression
    Have one eternal round.
    (I need that)
    There is no end to matter;
    There is no end to space;
    There is no end to spirit;
    There is no end to race.
  4. 4. There is no end to virtue;
    There is no end to might;
    There is no end to wisdom;
    There is no end to light.
    There is no end to union;
    There is no end to youth;
    There is no end to priesthood;
    There is no end to truth.
  5. 5. There is no end to glory;
    There is no end to love;
    There is no end to being;
    There is no death above.
    There is no end to glory;
    There is no end to love;
    There is no end to being;
    There is no death above.
    (There is no end to the boundless blessing from Christ through His Atoning sacrifice and because He is the God of this world.)
  6. Text: William W. Phelps, 1792-1872

    I'm telling you!  This overwhelmed my little bean-sized brain.

Book of Mormon Study... Title page and testimony of the witnesses

According to the Prophet Joseph Smith, “the title-page of the Book of Mormon is a literal translation, taken from the very last leaf, on the left hand side of the collection or book of plates, which contained the record which has been translated, the language of the whole running the same as all Hebrew writing in general; and that said title page is not by any means a modern composition, either of mine or of any other man who has lived or does live in this generation” (History of the Church, 1:71).

That means it’s scripture too! That is why today I start my Book of Mormon study with the title page.

I am part of the House of Israel. My children and their children are a part of the House of Israel. This Book is written for me and for them.

I love that the Title page declares that this book is a “gift”… now this book I am marking will become a “gift” for my grandson. How cool is that? I feel like Nephi, writing my testimony of Jesus Christ and of the gospel plan as I study God’s word so …

An Open Letter to Those Who Hate The School Dress Code

I have noticed a ton of resistance to dress codes in schools.  I have something to say... get over it.
A dress code is not about body shaming.  It is not about control.  It's not about taking away individuality. The dress code is not about making social divisions.  It is not about taking away individual rights.
A dress code is about keeping a professional environment where real work happens.  Contrary to popular belief, woman don't get to wear whatever they want when ever they want in "the real world." Every profession has some kind of dress code.  Nurses, doctors, real estate brokers, vets, and even McDonald's workers have a dress code.  Even farmers and day labors wear clothing appropriate to the work they do.  School is a professional environment where the student's "job" is to be the student - to learn - and the teachers' job is to open the possibilities in young minds and to create an environment where people - all people - can learn.  Th…

Once-a-Slightly Over Month Cooking

Today may be the last day of the year, but it was the first day of the month around the Boyack house.  Today was Once-a-Month-Cooking day.  The funny thing is that it usually ends up lasting longer than a month.  Our last big cooking day lasted from September to now.  The thing is, I don't always pull from the freezer.  Weekend we cook from scratch.  However, with my voice lessons in late afternoons and sometimes play practice or performance I am too tired to think about dinner.  Making dinner ahead saved me so much money from September to Christmas that I was able to pay for half of Christmas from the savings from the food budget.  Plus, we had much healthier meals!

After collecting which recipes we wanted to make, and making a shopping list, John headed to the store around noon.  We started the cooking and assembly around 1:00 and ended all the cooking by 7:00.  In that time we made 35 dinners.  We have the fix-in's in the cupboard to make 15 more quick and easy meals.  We …
